I’ve long recognized this as a weakness in my writing process. When I don’t consciously focus on character, my instinct is to jump to plot. Writing character-driven stories is a challenge for me. I’m more attracted to the cool thing my characters have to do, whatever it might be: the McGuffin they must attain, the malicious force they have to stop, the adventures they have along the way. Developing an interesting character isn’t usually how I go about writing a story, at least not at first.
